Cinco de Mayo!
What are we actually celebrating?
Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5th (Well, that makes sense). We are celebrating the liberation of Mexico from France. This date commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragozain, during the Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862. Viva la Gente!
Top reasons to celebrate Cinco de Mayo mixed with a couple of fun facts according to Helmet Grease.
1. An excuse to throw your diet out the window! Tequila, chips and salsa, guacamole, fried stuff!
2. Corona!
3. The first documented celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the United States was a year later in 1863 in Southern California!
4. Denver has the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States….over 400,000 people attend annually.
5. Unfortunately, the French took back Pueblo two years later and squashed the rebellion and Juarez’s government. But let’s not focus on that today. Hence number 6.
6. Tequila! (Yes, I know I mentioned it in number one above. But I think it is worth mentioning twice, don’ you?)
So, let’s celebrate Cinco de Mayo today! We need a reason to celebrate!
